  3. Description of your presentation (100 words max). This will be used on the website and in the printed program

    This workshop will focus on ways to understand commonly occurring digestive conditions within Ayurvedic and yoga therapy frameworks. Specific yoga therapy strategies based on these frameworks will be discussed related to the following conditions: constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This presentation will emphasize the application of condition specific yoga strategies including adaptation of asana, breath awareness and pranayama and contraindications to their use.

    Gary Kraftsow, M.A., E-RYT 500, has been a pioneer in the transmission of yoga for over 30 years. His study of yoga began with T.K.V. Desikachar in 1974. He received a Viniyoga Special Diploma while completing academic studies in philosophy, psychology and religion. Kraftsow authored Yoga for Wellness and Yoga for Transformation and four Viniyoga Therapy DVDs. He developed yoga therapy interventions for NIH studies and a stress reduction intervention for the Aetna Mind-Body Pilot.

    Clare Collins, RN, PhD, FAAN, CYT, E-RYT 500 is a Yoga Therapist in East Lansing, Michigan, Coordinator for the American Viniyoga Institute (AVI) Viniyoga Therapist Training and Professor Emeritus of Nursing at Michigan State University. She completed a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Nursing at Yale University, Ph.D in Counseling at University of Michigan and a post-doctoral research fellowship in geriatric mental health at NIMH. She has completed extensive studies in yoga and Yoga Therapy.

    Overall Objective: To describe yoga therapy strategies (prayoga) for commonly occurring digestive conditions (constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease)

    Learning Objectives

    At the conclusion of this session (theory and practice), the student will:

    1. Understand the theoretical frameworks and concepts from Ayurveda and Yoga for understanding commonly occurring digestive conditions

    2. Describe general yoga therapy strategies for promoting digestive health

    3. Identify and apply specific yoga therapy strategies for commonly occurring conditions (constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease).

    This presentation is based on a module on Yoga therapy with digestive disorders that is part of the core curriculum of the Viniyoga Therapist Training at the American Viniyoga Institute.
