  2. Title: Synergic Medical and Yoga Treatment of Lower Back Pain

  3. Name: Loren M. Fishman, MD, B.Phil. (oxon.)

  4. Description: Prominent studies confirm the value of yoga in relieving lower back pain and sciatica. However, few distinguish the separate pathogenetic mechanisms for these symptoms. Yet doing so enables therapists to be more specific, and treatment proportionately more effective. This course reviews physical examination, higher tech and actual asana that are helpful in differentiating the seven major causes of back pain, and suitable asanas for each.

  5. Competencies:
    2.1.1 Human anatomy and physiology.
    2.1.2 Biomechanics and movement
    2.1.3 Common pathologies and disorders
2.2.2 Familiarity with commonly used medical terminology
2.2.3 How to reference current healthcare information

  6. Biography: Loren Fishman, MD, has used medical technology to verify and explain yoga’s virtues for 30 years, publishing over 80 related papers and books, and teaching at Columbia Medical School. His continuing work in back pain, rotator cuff and osteoporosis is the basis of his Park Avenue practice, and the basis of his lectures and workshops. He is past president of the New York Society of PMR, and currently serves as associate editor of Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation and treasurer of a national charity.
