CALL FOR COMMON INTEREST COMMUNITY (CIC) PRESENTATIONS

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS

  • Proposals are in two parts: 1) a one-page proposal and 2) a short (< one-half page) description of your experience with professional presentations to large groups. Presenters are expected to offer dynamic, interesting content vs. dry, “reading the slides with no eye contact” sleeper style.
  • Proposals will be considered only if submitted in English.
  • The proposal must be prepared in a Microsoft Word document compatible format. (Mac users be careful).
  • At the top of the page, indicate the interest community for which the proposal is to be considered.
  • Length of the one-page proposal, excluding the title and the author(s), should not exceed 2500 characters, including spaces (please note: 2500 characters, not words).
  • Font: Black, Arial, 10 point size.
  • For the presentation proposal, use the following headings: "Objective", "Teaching Methods", "Description" and "Interest to the Community". See the example below. The heading on the second page should be "Presentation Experience."
  • The acceptable format for the proposal title, presenter, institution, city, state and key words for the proposal submission is shown in the following example:

The benefit of extended savasana for fibromyalgia.
    J.K. Chang, BS, RYT
Department of Physical Education, University of Modern Sciences, Zanesville, Ohio

    Keywords: Yoga, savasana, fibromyalgia
  • The organizers do not edit proposals and author corrections will not be accepted after final submission. Proposals should be checked carefully for accuracy prior to submission. Proposals failing to meet all the proposal requirements may not be accepted.
  • The title may be a maximum of 150 characters, typed principally in lowercase letters, and using capitals only where essential (e.g., ‘New applications of BKS Iyengar props’). Titles exceeding this limit will be automatically truncated.
  • The proposal should be as informative as possible. Describe applications, proposed teaching method and provide brief numerical and statistical results if available. The inclusion of innovation and general interest to the interest community is an important consideration in the evaluation/scoring of the proposal, along with presentation experience.
  • Non-standard abbreviations should be described in full when first mentioned followed by the abbreviation in parentheses.
  • The review of proposals is blind, that is, reviewers will not know the author of the proposal.
  • Individuals may submit two proposals. However, no more than one proposal may be presented. If both proposals are accepted, please notify us immediately with your preference.
  • Remember: Individuals whose proposals are selected are required to register for the meeting no later than April 12. Proposals from those who do not register will not be included in the respective CIC session.

Example of an interest community proposal

Common Interest Community: Seniors
Yoga therapy for fall prevention in an assisted living center.

 K. Johnson
Johnson Lotus Yoga Therapy, Pittsburgh, PA

Keywords: Yoga, fall prevention

Objective: Yoga is an increasingly popular, but untested, complementary and alternative medical treatment that is used for preventing falls. Falls are a leading cause of morbidity in senior citizens. This presentation describes our program at a local assisted living facility that has helped to decrease falls at the facility by 50% in the three years since we began teaching Yoga. We want to share our experience of what has worked and also what did not work in this setting.
Teaching Methods: A brief didactic PowerPoint description followed by a practical demonstration of the favorite asana of our group.
Description: We have presented Yoga for fall prevention at an assisted living center of 70 residents for three years. The average class is 14 residents. We have an ongoing contract with the facility where we are paid a fixed amount per class with additional fees if the class exceeds 12 participants to pay for assistants. We have been featured in both the local paper and radio. The facility uses our program as a PR tool to be seen as both safety conscious and progressive in thinking. We had to add a second class per week this year due to space restrictions and popularity.
Interest to the Community: This program can be easily replicated in communities to not only serve the residents, but in awareness of Yoga therapy in the community and for the members practice promotion.
